I remember watching the first three movies when I was just a kid. Thank you for taking the time to finish this after all these years.
Beautiful animation and great music. The ending felt a bit anticlimactic, but that's fine.

Love the gameplay, the attacking mechanics are very original. The game does get quite repetitive, and with the seemingly random amount of enemies on every wave, the difficulty is rather inconsistent. Though that's forgivable since the game was made in only 2 days. The idea of the game is very fun and I hope you can do more with it.

It's great for a start, a lot to improve though.

The intro is really long, should be shorter imo.

I liked the combat, it feels nice and responsive. Gun animations should be made to not loop though - when you shoot with the revolver, the firing animation plays 2 or 3 times.

Right now the game is quite repetitive and got boring after the 5th wave. Maybe add more different enemies, or more locations? Perhaps a campaign later on.

Agreed with the review below, you could get your own assets. There's a lot of free game art online, just google "free game art". Or at least you should ask Dennaton if you can use their sprites.

Just like the original Hotline Miami 1&2, the game goes into slow-mo if the framerate drops, any way you could fix that?

Also, did you make the level with HM2's editor? I suggest putting edges at doorways, at least where there's a change of floor type.

All in all, it's a good start. Mechanically the game feels nice. Looking forward to further updates.

MD-Wade responds:

Hi,

the intro being long is as a result of needing to get across information that players didn't seem to read from the descriptions or instructions. I'd love to be able to make a tutorial and such that explains everything better once I've got time to do so. The gun animation loop is a bug I just introduced, it seems. It fixed the bug where the melee attacking animations didn't play but I didn't notice that. Gonna try to fix that! As for the art, I've reached out to Dennaton (both Jonatan and Dennis) several times over the past few months and have never gotten word from them. We are in the process of redoing the art, but this is a passion project and we are operating on a $0 budget. The map was made by hand in the GameMaker room editor -- I'll try to tweak it some to make it more aesthetically pleasing :)

Thank you for playing and for the feedback!

Thanks for including my songs in the game! This game is enjoyable but there are some things to improve. Here's what I think.

What I liked: the overall idea of the game, the graphics.

What I didn't like: the lack of decoration in levels (pretty much every platform is the same sprite, etc), the ladder movement feels delayed and wonky, same with aiming ranged weapons. The combat is very repetitive, you just move and hold left click. There isn't really a reason to use your special ability most of the time.

Personal suggestions: I think the combat should be harder and the enemies should be more aggressive. If you can, you should make the enemies drop items instead of having them appear all over the map after you clear the stage, as right now it feels a bit annoying to go around and collect them. During cutscenes (such as when the first boss arrives), player controls should be disabled. Add some variety to the sounds, maybe pitch shift them randomly like some games do, just so it doesn't feel so repetitive. Having one track play in each level could make the game more "immersive" but that's just my opinion. Also I would suggest cropping the songs a little bit because it doesn't feel right when the intro of a song plays during a battle (especially Rack Extension Reckoning, where the intro is super long).

For a start, this isn't too bad. If you continue developing and improving the game, it can grow into a game worth playing. Right now it honestly just feels a bit raw.

GoodL responds:

Thanks for the input, these are some good suggestions and I'll keep them in mind going forward!

Not a big fan of the overpowering brickwall compression, but it's a cool sound, feels like a good mix between Carpenter Brut and Perturbator. RIP my ears though, I had volume on full when pressing Play.

Oh uh-
I'm sorry for your ears o-o

Really nice sound. I feel like the chromatic bits are out of place in this piece, but other than that I like it a lot.

TheMusicalManiac responds:

I get it, its an acquired taste. Thanks for your vote! :3

I love the instrumentation and in general this is great, nice progression and a pleasant sound. Guitar definitely sticks out a bit too much though, I suggest lowering the volume and not panning it so far to the left; perhaps put some reverb on it as well for more atmosphere. Good work!

Edit: Better now! Guitar is still a bit too loud though imo.

DESHIEL responds:

Oh shit I didnt realise I had the guitar panned to the left :X

uploading a fix lol
